Reputation: Strong university-based program in California.

Pros: Good operative experience in university setting. Early operative experience. Skinner is most well known attending there. It is tough to beat Irvine, located near Huntington Beach in close proximity to LA and San Diego.

Cons: New chairman Gupta has replaced Skinner and is likely to make changes to program. Somewhat small number of faculty given the size of the residency program.

Final Word: Strong program in excellent location. Would be lucky to get one of these coveted spots.

Just to post in response to the above, we've recently hired 2 new faculty to fill some spots. We hired Dr. David Zamarano last July, a noted traumatologist who won teaching awards from residents at UCLA-Harbor. We've also recently hired Dr. Neil Jones the chief of the hand service from UCLA. He's board-certified in Plastics and Ortho, so he should be a great addition to our program. One of our other faculty, Dr. Martin Tynan, is currently undergoing a trauma fellowship at Wash U so that all of our faculty can be fellowship trained.
