Would agree with the semi-malignant qualities of this program... Not to mention, the hospital is a county hospital-- OR turnover averages probably around 2 hours. They are limited to one attending for most sub specialties. Additionally, call is still Q4 during the 'research year'. Great group of residents though...

as an attending at this program, i would agree that this is an up and coming and stable program. i do believe that stability and strong leadership is extremely important in a program. the stability means not a lot of attrition of attendings. over the last 4 years the has been 0% attrition. moed's leadership has improve the position of the orthopaedic department in the university as well as improving the residency program.

as far as malignancy of the program, this is very mild from my experience. we expect a lot out of our residents; we expect them to be prepared and take responsibility for their work. we push our residents to be better. if you do something wrong, you will be told.

the program is building, the sports, which has been considered a weakness, is improving with a rotations with the St. Louis Cardinal physicians. the hand rotation is also improving with an academic and private hand rotation.

the hospital experience is also improving with the addition of the private hospital (St. John's) for both trauma, joints, and spine. the rotations include SLU University Hospital, Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, Des Peres Hospital (private), St. John's (private), and the Orthopaedic Center of St. Louis(outpatient).

the call in the research year has been very helpful at keeping the research year resident's clinical skills fresh and keep them involve with the program. their call at the children's hospital is home call and is usually not too bad; at SLUH, it is in-house and can be brutal.

over all, this is a great program with a solid group of staff that all get along and a good group of residents. there is a solid curriculum in place and good opportunity for producing good research. the program will push you to be better. our goal is to put out well trained orthopaedic surgeons.
